New Moon, New You and Wishes Too

By on January 27, 2017

The moon’s most profound magic is her rhythm. As la Luna waxes from new to crescent to quarter to gibbous to full and then wanes back to gibbous to quarter to crescent to dark and new again, her phases are a consistent reminder of circular time. This pattern is one we live each day as the sun rises and sets and each year as we cycle through the seasons. It is one we experience in our projects at work and home from the most anticipated to the most mundane.

New Moon

The new moon exerts as powerful an influence on us, the earth and oceans—most noticeable in the tides and currents—as the full moon. But since she’s hidden from view we tend to pay this dark, mysterious force of nature less attention.

But just as dancing around the pole can reveal and heal issues that enable us to become the best version of ourselves, tuning into the moon can have similar effects.

In particular, the dark/new moon is a powerful time of endings and new beginnings. It can be a time to start fresh, reminiscent of the new year, each month. It’s a time to get quiet and go within. Experiment with giving yourself time to reflect around the new moon to tap into intuition and connect with your inner wisdom. To dream. To be inspired. To envision.

The next new moon occurs at 4:07 pm PST on January 27 (or 12:06 am GMT on January 28). That night or the next two as the moon begins to wax is a great time to revisit your 2017 vision board and your New Year’s resolutions and intentions. In fact, each new moon provides the opportunity to revisit your wishes, desires, intentions and commitments.

What do you really want? And what are you willing to do to manifest these desires?

New Moon Wishing

According to astrologers like Jan Spiller, author of New Moon Astrology and Jasmine Boland, author of Moonology, the new moon is an ideal time to make wishes for what you want to manifest in your life. They both recommend making up to ten wishes as soon as you can after the new moon, up to three days after.

Years ago, I dabbled with new moon wishes after reading about the idea on a blog. I became interested in Astrology as a science after learning that it was more than our sun signs and those one-size-fits-all horoscopes in local newspapers from one of my pole dance instructors who was taking graduate courses in astrology. Who knew Astrology was an actual science, with research and everything?

But after several months of wishing, where nothing seemed to happen, I lost interest in the wishing. Still I kept synching my life with the moon and seasons.

Then this year I finally found a lunar calendar—Lunaria—that actually begins each new lunar month on the new moon. This is something I’ve wanted for years. I decided to revisit the new moon wishing when I discovered the book Moonolgy because Boland’s approach includes much more than mere wishing,

moonology

While it’s called “new moon wishing” it includes clarifying your wants, focusing on them, using affirmations and setting intentions, defined as making commitments to actually taking steps toward making these dreams come true.

So, last month I followed Boland’s new moon wishing process:

1. Write top ten wishes for the month.
2. Visualize, feel and embody the joy (or whatever emotion you’d experience) of wishes coming true.
3. Write affirmations (in the present tense) to support these desires.
4. Write intentions/commitments. How will you take steps toward making each happen.
5. Meditate (or Draw, Collage and/or Dance) on the wishes.
6. Release attachment.

Looking back at my wishes for this lunar cycle, I didn’t manifest any completely, at least not yet. If I’m honest, though, most are desires for the year, not one lunar cycle. Regarding the actions I committed to doing I took steps, some big, on six or seven of my wishes.

I tend to set ambitious goals and over-commit. For this lunar cycle I’m considering experimenting with long-term dreams and short-term wishes, with the latter being desires I could manifest by the full moon as intermediate wishes to my big dreams.

Perhaps most intriguing, two interesting offers fell into my lap: 1) a free course focused on doing what I say I’m going to do with ease; and 2) an offer to appear on a local radio show to talk about my book (securing literary representation and signing a publishing deal are two of my big dreams). These both feel like the universe stepping in to offer support. I’ve said yes to both.

There have been other small signs and evidence of synchronicity. I’m feeling optimistic and reminded of this quote from The Alchemist:  “And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” ~ Paulo Coelho

What big dreams and small wishes do you have for this year? Why not call on the magic of the moon to help? What have we got to lose?
